Things to do in Saint-Denis

Saint-Denis is Réunion's administrative capital, not a beach stop: there is no lagoon or managed swimming spot in town, so pair a visit here with Saint-Gilles-les-Bains or l'Hermitage on the west coast for the coast.

Budget half a day to a full day to walk the rue de Paris' creole houses, the Jardin de l'Etat and the Barachois seafront, where the Grande Mosquée Noor-e-Islam, Tamil temples and pagodes sit within a few streets of each other. Roland-Garros airport (RUN) is in Sainte-Marie, about 20 to 30 minutes east of the centre by car depending on traffic, not downtown itself.

Entry to the Jardin de l'Etat and the mosque courtyard is free; the Barachois market runs mornings, and the coastal road into town backs up at peak hours.
